Everything a journalist needs to tell the EcoCommute SA story

EcoCommute SA is a free carpooling app that connects South Australian commuters travelling the same corridors so they can share the drive, split fuel and running costs, and cut emissions. This page has everything you need to write about it — the story, the facts, quotes, and downloadable assets.

A note on framing

EcoCommute SA is cost-sharing carpooling, not a taxi or commercial rideshare service. Drivers are already making the trip; riders simply contribute toward fuel and running costs. Nobody charges a fare or drives for profit.

The story in brief

EcoCommute SA was designed and built single-handedly by Bradley Smith, a north-eastern Adelaide-based developer with no prior experience in app development. Frustrated by the cost of the daily commute — and by watching single-occupant cars crawl down the same freeways every morning, all heading the same way — the founder taught themselves to build a way for commuters to share the drive.

The result is now live on the web, the App Store and Google Play, and is completely free to use. It focuses on South Australia's busiest commute corridors, where public transport options are limited and fuel costs bite hardest.

I kept seeing single-person cars crawling down the freeway every morning, all heading the same way. I taught myself to build EcoCommute SA so we could just share the drive, split the cost, and take a few cars off the road.

  • Local maker: a self-taught South Australian who built and shipped a full app, solo, with no prior experience.
  • The transport gap: connecting Hills, Gawler and Murray Bridge commuters the timetable leaves driving alone.
  • Greener commuting: fewer cars on the road and lower emissions, corridor by corridor.

Trust & safety

Safety tools are built in to help members make informed choices:

  • Mutual post-trip ratings between drivers and riders.
  • Trust badges and verification earned through completed trips.
  • Block & report, with all reports reviewed.
  • In-app chat (no need to share your phone number).
